OK... What the Heck is Rage Cage?!

Anyone who knows me knows that I, like my good friend Michael, love a GOOD GAME of Rage Cage. But alas, I know that so many people have no idea what this is... and having spent many a drunken night trying to explain the rules, which are always constantly argued over... here's MY favorite way to play. Step by step.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

  • 2-4 ping pong balls (2 to start... you can add in more stacks later)
  • 30-100 solo cups
  • Large table
  • BEER. Lots of it
  • Friends.
SET UP

Take your solo cups and fill them each a 1/3 of the way full with beer. Feel free to fill up a few "BOMBS" with more beer towards the center. Arrange them geometrically on the center of the table. We have a rectangle so we normally go that route. You could also do a pretty flower if you're playing on a round table.

Disperse your players evenly around the table and pick two players, preferably across the table from each other, to "start" the game. Give them each a ping pong ball.

RULES

Start the game with a backwards 3, 2, 1 countdown, and then the two players with the balls pick up the cup closest to them, chug the beer, and attempt to bounce their ball into the empty cup. Once they succeed, they then pass the cup and the ball clockwise to the next player who then tries to bounce the ball into the empty cup.

MAKING IT ON YOUR FIRST TRY

If you happen to make the ball in the cup on your first try then you can pass the stack to any player around the table, excluding the player who is still bouncing.

JUMPING PLAYERS... i.e. GETTING CAGED

Now this is where the fun comes in. As you are playing, if the person to your RIGHT gets their ball into their cup/stack while you're still trying, and they "jump" you - you then must take a cup from the center of the table, chug it, and then add that empty cup to your stack before continuing. The player who jumped you passes his or her stack over you to the person to your left.

If the player to your LEFT happens to get it in on their first try and then passes the stack back over you - "jumping" you again, then you must take another cup and chug it, adding it to your stack before continuing.

This is the danger zone.

MAKING A MIDDLE CUP

Now - also if you accidentally don't catch your ball or it lands in one of the cups in the middle of the table (or you're just a little thirsty and want to drink) then you also must then chug that beer and add the cup to your stack before continuing.

UPPING THE ANTE

If you're playing with a really large group and things are feeling just a little too calm, start a 3rd or 4th stack to continue around the ring. It gets a little crazy, but it's totally worth it! And when you cage two people (jump over 2 or more players) it's truly rewarding.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO DRINK RESPONSIBLY

Just feel like I have to include this disclaimer - it's a truth. Don't drink and drive. Don't drink too much. Just remember it's a game and to always have fun! Most times if you're on the struggle bus, your neighbors will help you chug. It's more about just getting yourself out of the cage and then enjoying watching everyone else struggle with the towering stacks of cups!
