Deep Dish Pizza Pot Pie || Chicago Pizza And Oven Grinder Co.

Succulent and rich meat sauce, hearty mushrooms, and what feels like an actual whole pound of cheese makes this dish something to never forget...

Be still my heart. OK I will acknowledge there's something special about a deep dish... I mean, I'm dating the king of cheese himself - so I know that there's lots of those in my future... BUT if I'm going to pick a cheesy Chicago favorite, it's hands down Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder's pot pie. It's iconic. It's classic that's been around since 1972. And once you try it, you'll instantly know why.

The pizza pot pies are still made with the same recipe that owner Albert H. Beaver used when he opened the joint. The sauce is made from scratch each day and simmered for 8 hours. They use fresh Wisconsin brick cheese, and whole delicious mushrooms. The whole thing is topped with crust and then baked until everything is golden brown and ooey gooey delicious!

But as amazing as this cheesy pot pie is - and yes, I know you all love a good cheese pull - what is actually the runaway star of this restaurant is their SALAD DRESSING.

Yep, you read that right! When you visit - they have two homemade dressings that they serve... plays on classics. One a sweet & sour poppyseed dressing that almost feels like a glaze. The other a savory garlic and sour cream dressing that tastes better than any cream dressing you've ever had.

But somehow, somewhere, some genius decided to combine the two and that's where the magic was born! You need them both... together... it's the yin and yang you never knew existed in this world. To my boyfriend it tasted perfectly like the midwest. Creamy, rich, decadent, with just the right amount of sweetness to offset the funky garlic flavor.

Cathy the GM was SO sweet that she sent me home with some, which I have to admit I've pretty much been eating every day... I even packed my suitcase full of ice so I could make sure my jars arrived home safe and sound!

But when talking about salads, I do have to also mention that CPOG might have the craziest SALAD I've ever seen in my life. It's the midwest and it's go big or go home right?

I mean LOOK at this thing! It's a beast! This is their "Italian Fiesta"

Lettuce, smoked ham, Italian cappocola, provolone and Swiss cheeses, Italian sausage, meatballs, Genoa salami, pepperoni, artichoke hearts, green peppers, anchovies, tomatoes, olives, whole pepperoncini, sliced fresh mushrooms, whole pickled mushrooms, cucumbers, pickled red pimento peppers, chopped green onions…covered with freshly grated Romano cheese.

So yeah... whatever you're doing - do yourself the biggest favor and make your way over to Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. You'll be so happy you made the trek. But be forewarned - this place gets PACKED every single day. So if you're not there right when it opens, you're going to be waiting a very very long time.
